Summerland Yacht Club Directors
 |
Commodore: Janice Cornett-Ching -
We moved to the Summerland in June of 1969, from Calgary Alberta. We lived on the hill above the Yacht Club and to our dismay watched it burn down on or around 1970. There wasn't much left but the fireplace. The club was rebuilt and we joined in 1971. My family have been involved since that time. My father put his initials on the boat ramp when it was redone, my mother was secretary when Al Miller was Commodore, and three of my kids worked the gas pumps during their summer holidays for 3 consecutive years. My husband Jack was Commodore for two years. I feel we are a yacht club family.
I have been on the board of directors for most of my time as a member. I was on board with Dick Norris, as secretary, when we had a meeting to discuss whether or not to close the club as we were broke. We pulled it off and got the club up and running again. I have been on as secretary for many of the Commodores over the years, and also spent many years as Staff Captain, organizing all the social functions and parties. I remember when we had box lunches which we auctioned off and you had to sit with whoever bought your lunch box! We followed it by a dance with taped music. We've progressed a long way from those days!
I look forward to a successful run as Commodore and will endeavour to make this club a fun place to be, as it has been in past years.
Respectfully submitted,
Jan Cornett-Ching

Staff Captain: Brenda Carleton
My husband, Hugh and I lived in West Vancouver for many years. During those years we raised 2 children and i worked for the local government in the financial areas. We moved to Summerland in 1997. After moving to Summerland, we ran a bed and breakfast for 8 years. We have been members of the Summerland Yacht Club for 9 years.
This is my third year as a Director of SYC. The bar and kitchen area have been my responsibility. I am pleased to say that after many years, the kitchen finally made a profit last year.

Harbour Master: Art More
Art has lived in Summerland for the 6 years. This is his first term on the Executive; he also worked on the lease committee a couple of years ago. Art and his wife Marcia Dean love being out on the lake pulling their grandchildren on a tube, exploring, or just turning off the motor, turning up the stereo, opening a bottle of wine and drifting.
Art has served on the Boards of a variety of organizations over the past few decades and is presently a member of the Parish Council at St Saviours Anglican Church in Penticton.
Art retired in 2001 after many years as a professor in Educational Psychology at the University of BC. He is still active in his consulting business but only on a part time basis. He and Marcia do a great deal of travelling; this year they will take their 6th trip to Papua New Guinea to train HIV and AIDS workers in counselling skills.
His hobbies include photography, boating, skiing, cycling and travel as well as being a grandfather to 14 grandchildren.
His main goal on the Executive is to use his skills, knowledge and energy to help return the Club to a place for people who love to boat and enjoy each other’s company. He sees the need to get the Club operating efficiently, consistently, and in a more organized manner.

Fleet Captain: Gerard Obbema
Gerard Obbema, member since 2002. Was active at SYC for about 4 to 6 weeks during the summer, but became a resident of Summerland in November 2007 and I am now "Full Time".
Started racing with SYC on Thursday's and Sunday's to improve sailing and boating skills, meet fellow club members at SYC and clubs arround the lake.
As fleet captain I promote safe and fun sailing with that competitive edge.
Semi retired from the Oil and Gas industry and time to give back to the club.
It is SYC that made me pick Summerland for a place to live and need to work hard with all members to save the club and it's beautifull facility(s) for SYC members.
Hope to meet all you boaters on the dock, lake or clubhouse.
Cheers Gerard
